Peter May brings back his famous detective Fin Macleod after a campaign by loyal readers
It’s the book crime fiction fans around the world have been waiting more than a decade to read and author Peter May has revealed he very nearly didn’t write it.
Peter, whose books have been published in 37 languages, said: “The Black Loch was never on my horizon and I never had any intention of writing it - or any other book for that matter. “My research trip for the novel was cancelled due to Covid. The book was dead in the water as I couldn’t write it without the research so the whole idea was abandoned.
He said: “It was an interesting experience going back to the old characters. At first I was scared to revisit them as I was older and they were older. “As part of my research for the book I spoke to Andrew Brownlow, the head of SMASS who told me how extended families of pilot whales will sacrifice themselves for just one of its members.
This time the former journalist, who created the first ever Gaelic soap opera ‘Machair’ shines a light on the realities of salmon farming and its environmental impact. “I learned a two-acre fish farm discharging waste, pesticides and other chemicals directly into ecologically fragile coastal can produce as much effluent as a town of 10,000 people.”
