Sigourney Weaver confirms her return for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 before the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The actor appeared in the first Avatar film back in 2009, playing the character of Grace, who is one of the RDA members studying the Na'vi on Pandora. Grace dies at the end of Avatar, but this already has not stopped the franchise from including Weaver in future films, for the actor appeared in Avatar: The Way of Water as a character named Kiri.
WEAVER: I remember reading the script of the first Avatar and reading about these blue people with pointed ears and tails riding on these creatures through floating mountains … I couldn’t imagine any of it being shot. I honestly couldn’t imagine how he would ever make a film that looked like this and had these elements. But I’m so glad for Jim, and for the success of these films, which has meant we’re able to keep making them.
Furthermore, Kiri helps add to the theme of unconventional families that is encapsulated by the Sully family in Avatar: The Way of Water. Prior to Neteyam's death, Jake and Neytiri essentially have five children — biological children, Neteyam, Lo'ak, and Tuk, adopted daughter Kiri, and Spider, who acts as almost their honorary son despite being a human child.
