Climate change is threatening the global supply of avocados, leading to potential shortages. Erratic weather patterns and rising temperatures are affecting avocado production in key growing regions.

Shoppers are being warned about a potential shortage of avocados, as climate change threatens to disrupt its supply. The prime avocado-producing regions, including Spain, South Africa, Peru, Chile, and Mexico, are experiencing increasingly erratic weather patterns, which are hampering growth rates, reports the Express. Avocados are particularly water-intensive, requiring an estimated 320 litres to produce just one fruit—nearly four times more than what's needed for a kilo of oranges.

As temperatures rise and conditions grow arider, avocado yields could be severely affected, leading to reduced productivity. A stark report has warned that suitable areas for avocado cultivation could shrink by up to 41 percent by 2050. Mexico, the globe's top avocado grower, might witness a staggering 43 percent reduction in its growing area if the global average temperature edges towards a 5 percent increase. The intense demand for water in avocado farming is already placing a heavy burden on resources in arid zones like Mexico, and worsening climate conditions could exacerbate this issue, impacting production levels. The environmental website SaveMoneyCutCarbon reports: 'Our demand for avocado can be a benefit for the economies of the producer countries and the people who work in the sector but the rapid growth of the market also puts greater strain on the local ecologies, not least the increased pressure on water resources and on forest land. 'In the past decade, we have all been waking up to the fact that water is a precious and finite resource that we need to manage very carefully. Being aware of the water consumption footprint of the things we eat is one way to make good choices that help the planet in balance with sound economic management.' Shoppers have also been warned about the significant carbon footprint associated with purchasing avocados from supermarket
