White vinegar and baking soda, when used together, can have excellent cleaning capabilities. But using the combo in one specific area could result in a pretty hefty repair bill, according to an expert. Top Trending Stories Today Mark explained that when when the acetic acid in the vinegar mixes with the sodium bicarbonate in the baking soda, it produces foam by releasing carbon dioxide gas, water and other by-products. While this reaction can clean pipes, it can also damage rubber seals and the pipes themselves, especially in older plumbing systems.
Kitchens and bathroom drains can clog over time with grease, dirt, food waste and hair. To keep them working smoothly, Mark suggests cleaning drains every one to two weeks. He also lists what should never be poured down the sink to avoid blockages: grease, eggshell fragments, coffee grounds, hair products, fibrous or starchy food scraps.
