Avowed, a highly anticipated RPG, fails to deliver a smooth experience on the Steam Deck despite recent trends of successful ports.

Avowed is undeniably a fantastic game, but my curiosity led me to test its performance on the handheld gaming PC, the Steam Deck . The game's minimum required GPU, the GTX 1070, was released back in 2016. Recent role-playing games ( RPG s) with similar minimum requirements, such as Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, and Elden Ring, have managed to achieve a playable 30 frames per second (fps) on the Deck. Unfortunately, Avowed does not share this feat.

Even with minimal settings enabled and FSR performance activated, simply exploring the open world yielded a sluggish 20-25 fps. Engaging in combat with these frame rates seemed unfeasible. While you could attempt further optimization by reducing the resolution below the Deck's native 1280x800, it would push the experience to a point considered barely acceptable, even for less ambitious Nintendo Switch ports. The performance discrepancy is understandable considering Avowed primarily targets 30 fps on Xbox Series consoles, and its GTX 1070 minimum requirement surpasses the GTX 1060 or 970 demanded by numerous games capable of achieving playable frame rates on the Deck. However, Avowed remains a highly enjoyable experience on a desktop PC, with smooth performance observed at medium-high settings and 1440p resolution on an RTX 3070. For a comprehensive performance analysis across various hardware configurations and resolutions, refer to Nick's in-depth article.
