Ayrshire and Arran Health Board heard how dental practice shift to private care, recruitment issues and contract instability has placed huge pressure on service.
The post-pandemic recovery of dental services across Ayrshire is at ‘significant risk of stalling’, according to a new report.
The majority of dental treatment in Ayrshire is provided by a General Dental Practitioner , the ‘High Street dentist’ which generally provides a mix of contracted NHS dental care and private work from the same practice. However, GDPs have no obligation to continue to provide a level of NHS dental care and can reduce or withdraw their services at any time.
A report to the health board stated: “Due to the current practice delivery model, some GDP practices have chosen to reduce their NHS commitment due to a variety of reasons, including difficulties recruiting dental staff, or practitioners within practices opting to work reduced hours as well as associated costs with workforce and supplies.”
