TODAY’S EDITORIAL: Ayungin Shoal: The latest South China Sea flashpoint
AMID the uproar over the laser-flashing incident off Ayungin Shoal, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian visited Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Andres Centino for what has been described as a 'cordial and constructive' meeting.The Chinese envoy said he and the AFP chief 'discussed matters pertaining to mil to mil exchange and cooperation, as well as sustaining peace and stability in the region.
Aiming a military-grade laser beam on a ship may not be considered an armed attack, but Dr. Chester Cabalza, a security expert, sees it as China's way of saying it has the technology for 'electronic warfare.'Even before the Ayungin incident, the US has been rebuilding its security commitments with the Philippines that were weakened after the Duterte administration pivoted toward China.
