Zoo staff attempted to train two female troop members to care for Jameela, but said they weren’t observing the progress needed for either surrogacy to be...

Jameela was born premature on Jan. 5 via emergency C-section after her mother, 33-year-old Sekani, was diagnosed with preeclampsia.

Premature baby gorilla, Jameela, who was born via emergency cesarean section at the Fort Worth Zoo, is pictured several weeks old, February 12, 2024.“While we hoped for a different outcome – one that includes Jameela fully integrated into our troop – our main goal has always been that Jameela is raised by gorillas,” zoo officials wrote on Facebook. “We are understandably heartbroken, Jameela has left an indelible mark on all of us here at the Zoo and in the Fort Worth community.

Dr. Jamie Walker Erwin of VIVI Women’s Health cradles premature baby gorilla, Jameela, shortly after an emergency cesarean section at the Fort Worth Zoo.Sekani showed little interest in caring for Jameela, which zoo staff previously said could be attributed to her not experiencing the necessary hormonal cues that come with natural and full-term births.

After spending several weeks searching for an institution home to a female gorilla with proven surrogate experience, zoo officials said they have determined the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo “will make every effort to successfully integrate Jameela into their troop.”Jameela will likely be transferred early next week, so the Fort Worth Zoo is offering the public a chance to see her in the World of Primates exhibit on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m.

“She will always be a part of the Fort Worth Zoo,” zoo officials said. “We hope to see her back in Fort Worth one day.”Dallas Zoo suspect Davion Irvin found incompetent for trial, 6 cruelty charges dropped, Breaking News Reporter.
