The baby killer who posed as a grieving dad and a defenceless child who did 'everything he could to survive'
Posing as the grieving father, the inking, covering the left side of his neck, bore the name of his baby son Abel-Jax, surrounded by a heart, angel wings, a handprint, and the baby's date of birth.
Then, as the baby lay on life support, the Burnley dad told a web of lies to try and save his own skin - even letting Abel's heartbroken mum Mollie fall under investigation for the non-accidental injuries which killed her child.To the outside world, Mailey presented the image of the doting dad. He had wanted a child for many years and had undergone fertility tests in a previous relationship which showed he had a low sperm count.
Mr Justice Cotter, sentencing, said: “Abel-Jax for his part, even at that tender age was doing his best to make his feelings known.” Mailey’s brother spoke to him on the phone at 11:45am and heard the baby cry in hunger. He then heard the nuzzling sound of Abel taking a bottle. During police interviews, he said he was aware Abel needed careful handling because he was fragile, and said he had only taken him out in the pram a few times, because he was “dinky”.
“The reason why he has been crying more in the week before his death was that you had broken several of his ribs. You may have been tired as your work was physical; but no more than many other jobs although regular employment may have been new to you.
