Jamie Varley, 37, and John McGowan-Fazackerly, 32, are charged with a string of offences against 13-month-old Preston

Injuries sustained by a baby who later died were 'highly indicative of sexual trauma', a jury has been told. The trial of two adoptive dads following the death of baby Preston Davey heard today from senior paediatrician Dr Sarah Gifford.

Jamie Varley, 37, and John McGowan-Fazackerly, 32, are charged with a string of offences against 13-month-old Preston, who they were in the process of adopting. Speaking today at Preston Crown Court, Dr Gifford says she was given information from Preston's post mortem by Dr Alison Armour, as well as images taken from hospital at the time Preston died. She told the court today that the injuries to Preston’s pelvic organs were highly indicative of sexual trauma, reports the MEN.

"I would expect him to look extremely unwell, in a critical condition from the time this occurred," she added. Signs would be a child looking very unwell, with breathing in distress and possible swelling to the tummy, adds the doctor. She says there would also be vomiting, diarrhoea and collapse resulting from the types of injuries found in Preston.

Preston, who went by the name of Elijah while in the care of the couple, died after being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital at 7.15pm on July 27, 2023. The two men are currently on trial at Preston Crown Court charged with a series of offences. Varley is accused of murder; sexual assault of a child under 13; inflicting grievous bodily harm; five counts of child cruelty; and further counts of making, taking and distributing indecent images.

McGowan-Fazackerley is accused of causing or allowing the death of a child; two counts of child cruelty; and sexual assault of a child under 13. Both men, of Staining Avenue, Blackpool, deny all charges brought against them. The trial is scheduled to last for around six weeks. Get More of Our News on Google.
