Recently hatched baby red handfish in Tasmania's Frederick Henry Bay are a beacon of hope for the endangered species facing threats in their habitat.
The tiny fish species is only found in two small 50 metre stretches of reef in Frederick Henry Bay in Tasmania 's south-east, and their habitat is facing a growing number of threats. Before they are released into the wild, the juveniles will attend "school" to make them "street smart", a researcher says. Recently hatched and measuring just 8 millimetres long, these 21 baby red handfish huddled around their mother are a beacon of hope in the face of a rapidly deteriorating wild population.
The eggs took just over 50 days to hatch and were cared for by their "doting" mother the entire time. First discovered off the Tasmanian coast in the 1800s, the red handfish population has always been low and in steady decline.
