Despite creator and star Richard Gadd’s pleas, viewers of the hit Netflix series continue to try to identify the ‘real’ people involved.
“People I love, have worked with, and admire … are unfairly getting caught up in speculation,” Gadd wrote in an Instagram story posted on Wednesday but no longer visible. “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real life people could be. That’s not the point of our show.”
Last week, a well-known actor, writer and director for British stage and television stepped down from a senior role in the theatre industry. That, along with the striking physical resemblance he bears to Tom Goodman-Hill, the actor who plays O’Connor, was enough to have some internet pundits joining the dots.
In the case of Martha, Gadd makes it very clear that he believes she lives with mental illness of some kind, and deserves both empathy and protection. : “Most would probably agree that, as victim, Gadd has a right to tell his story. But what are the limits of this right? And what are the responsibilities of its execution?”, the CSIRO encourages people using personal information “to consider not only the data itself, but also the environment the data will be released into” when attempting to ensure it is de-identified.
