Learn how to safely and effectively de-ice your driveway using a simple baking soda solution, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to commercial de-icers.
With the UK bracing itself for a cold snap, the risk of icy driveways, pathways, and patios is a growing concern, especially for those early morning school runs and commutes. These slippery surfaces are not only a nuisance, but they also pose a significant hazard, with the potential for painful injuries from slips and falls. The good news is that you don't have to rely on expensive, chemical-laden commercial de-icers to keep your driveway safe.
You may already have the perfect solution in your kitchen, and if not, it'll only set you back 65p. According to the team at Lottomart, a baking soda solution is an effective and eco-friendly way to de-ice your driveway. A spokesperson explained: 'Choosing to melt ice with a solution including baking soda instead of a commercial de-icer has some real perks.' A lower price tag, fewer chemicals, and the likelihood that you already have it in your kitchen make baking soda an attractive alternative. Plus, it's less alkaline than the salts found in traditional de-icers, making it gentler on surfaces and less likely to cause damage to materials like brick, concrete, and metal, reports the Express. The experts added: 'Baking soda is the least abrasive corrosive option compared to salt, cat litter, or commercial de-icers. It's safer for your driveway, neighbouring plants, garden, and pets, and you don't need to worry about long-term damage from harsh chemicals.' How to make the baking soda solution Firstly, collect 100g of baking soda and 4.5 litres of warm water. Mix these together in a large container, stirring continuously until the soda is fully dissolved. Once combined, apply the solution directly onto icy areas such as driveways, paths, garden walkways, or patios. After a few minutes, you should notice the ice beginning to melt. To stop the ice from reforming, sprinkle some sand over the previously icy area. This will enhance traction and further minimise the risk of slipping
