Baldwin County woman charged in murder-for-hire plot appears in federal court thumbnail_image006.jpeg were arrested Friday. Smith made her initial appearance in federal court Tuesday. According to complaint, the target was Grimes 's son-in-law who she accused of physically assaulting her daughter and grandchildren and drugging her daughter and forcing her to have sex with others.
The complaint states in February Grimes and the two sisters hired Rebecca Murphy, a convicted felon who once lived by Smith, to murder the son-in-law. The complaint says Owen paid Murphy's $500 vet bill. Then, Owen, Grimes and Murphy drove to Louisiana to show Murphy where the son-in-law lived and requested the death be made to look like an overdose. Murphy never followed through and earlier this month told the FBI about the murder plot.
Smith is accused of giving Murphy a box with a 9mm gun in it to use in the murder. Soto is calling into question Murphy's credibility and points to her lengthy criminal background. He asked a judge to allow Smith to be released from jail while the case works its way through the system.
