The search for six workers who fell into freezing waters after a 300-metre cargo ship slammed into and brought down a key bridge in Maryland has been suspended.

A search and rescue operation to find six workers who were thrown into the river after a cargo shipped slammed into a Maryland bridge has been suspended. Picture: Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images/AFPCoast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath on Tuesday just before 7:30pm - about 17 hours after the incident - said the search will be temporarily suspended.
"The changing conditions out there have made it dangerous for first responders, the divers in the water."Rear Admiral Gilreath also told reporters the water temperature - which is at about 9C at 7:30pm - was"difficult" and that a large amount of debris could move with tides and currents, a concern for the team of divers who would have gone into the river.
Authorities were able to stop vehicles from entering the span after the crew issued an urgent mayday call that it had lost power and subsequent control of the ship. "It's horrifying, the bent steel, the ginormous ship, you can't described it other than pure devastation," he said to host Peter Stefanovic.
His employee went back to sleep but woke to calls from the local fire department asking for fuel about 3am to assist in the search and rescue mission.
