Ireland's 'pagan witch' Eurovision entry is a return to authentic and ancient Irishness
Within minutes of Irish Eurovision representative Bambie Thug’s brilliantly spooky performance at Tuesday night’s semi-finals, the hashtag “Crown The Witch” began trending on social media.
True, there were early grumblings about Ireland sending a “pagan witch” to one of the biggest stages in music. These voices have been drowned out, however, as the Bambie bandwagon picks up speed.Bambie Thug is something new from a country whose previous Eurovision candidates have included Jedward and a rubber turkey named Dustin. But they are also something old – a thrilling throwback to Ireland’s pre-Christian heritage.
St Brigid’s Day, 1 February, was declared an official public holiday in 2023 and has already become established as a sort of anti-. Where 17 March is an excuse for Americans to wear leprechaun beards, St Brigid’s Day is a celebration of a more authentic and ancient Irishness – and a symbol of a natural world threatened, as never before, by the climate crisis.
