Peace lilies are a favourite among houseplant enthusiasts, thanks to their long, elegant flowers. However, there's a simple trick to make these blooms even more impressive. If peace lilies aren't properly fertilized, they may produce weaker flowers or stop blooming altogether, hence the importance of feeding them the right nutrients. Eco expert and founder of Captain Bob Cat, Eva, suggests that you don't need to splurge on expensive fertilisers - banana peels can do the job instead.
She explained: 'Banana peels contain a lot of important nutrients: potassium, magnesium and phosphorous, just to mention a few.' The potassium in banana peels promotes healthy plant growth, while phosphorus supports flower production and magnesium is essential for energy production. This natural and inexpensive method can help peace lilies produce bigger, healthier and more lush flowers next year. However, it's not as simple as throwing a banana peel into the plant pot, as the rotting fruit can attract pests like flies or ants. Eva advises: 'I choose the simplest way: soaking the banana peel in water for up to a week, then dilute the banana peel infused water with fresh water and water the plants with it,' reports the Express. To create this banana peel fertiliser for peace lilies, all you need to do is place a banana peel into a jar with a lid, then fill the jar with water. Secure the lid and let the jar sit undisturbed for at least 24 hours, though it can be left for up to a month. The longer the peel infuses, the more nutrients will be in the water. When you're ready to water your peace lily, dilute the fertiliser so it's one part banana peel water to two to five parts fresh water.
