Alex Kramer's aunt, Lyn Bamber, was allegedly manipulated by her lodger into granting him power of attorney, which allowed him to control her finances and isolate her from her family.

Alex Kramer felt reassured when her elderly aunt Lyn Bamber found a lodger. She was in her seventies at the time and experiencing ailing physical health. “He seemed like a nice guy. We thought, well, that’s great, she’s got a bit of company, and if something happens, he’s around.

He would offer to do a bit of shopping for her – she was a bit agoraphobic, so all of it initially felt okay.”Covid made it more difficult to regularly visit and then the lodger asked Ms Bamber’s relatives to return the spare keys they had to her home. “I said, ‘I’m not giving back my key’. And then he changed all the locks on the house,” Ms Kramer said. Soon after, he stopped allowing Ms Bamber’s relatives to visit and phone calls and emails enquiring about her wellbeing went unanswered, Ms Kramer said. “She became bedbound, and he moved the phone from her bed so we couldn’t get ,” Ms Kramer claimed. She added that she also discovered the lodger had placed cameras into her aunt’s home, which he convinced her were to monitor her carers. Ms Kramer believes her aunt was a victim of coercive control, which prevented her from grasping that he was not acting in her best interests.“He convinced her, during Covid, to give him power of attorney because if something went wrong with her health, or if she had a fall, he needed to make decisions for her – but none of us knew that he’d done that.” Like many victims of abuse of power of attorneys, Ms Kramer said she does not believe her aunt, who died last December, realised that it allowed him to haveand he said, ‘she’s lost her marbles’.
