It's because Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year
When Christmas Day is on a weekend, like this year when it takes place on a Sunday, a substitute day is made a bank holiday instead. This year this will take place on December 27 instead of December 25, the day after Boxing Day.
Similarly, reports the Liverpool Echo, the New Year's bank holiday will take place on January 2. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not bank holidays.
