The first time I was “exposed” - to borrow a phrase from Andrea Leadsom - to the existence of LGBT people was at primary school. Not, as many children today are, in a lesson about equality and our differences and how there are many different ways to be a family, but with the casual toss of “gay” as a slur across the table from one of my classmates.
