An hour on the phone with Biba founder Barbara Hulanicki will convince you that washing machines are responsible for fast fashion, Audrey Hepburn was the saviour of all style, and that life for young people was miserable after World War II not because of the economic and political landscape, but because their parents were “horrendously naggy”.
Barbara watched her finished designs literally shrink to the size of belts on the hangers and went home crying, “That’s the end of us!” – only to receive a call from Fitz an hour later: “They are flying out!” To this day, the straight-talking businesswoman maintains that the girls looked so good in them because they had lived on tinned beans for so long.
