Barcelona, renowned for its al fresco dining, is implementing a ban on gas-powered patio heaters starting in 2025. The move aims to reduce carbon emissions and address concerns about overtourism, though it may lead to fewer outdoor dining options during colder months.
The Spanish city of Barcelona has banned gas-powered patio heaters. From January 1 2025, the ban will come into effect, potentially leading to a decrease in outdoor seating during winter. The decision, made after years of debate between the city council and restaurateurs, aims to reduce carbon emissions. While electric heaters with a capacity of 150W/m2 or less will be permitted between November 1 and April 30, gas-powered heaters are no longer allowed.
This ban follows similar measures in France and a thwarted attempt in Madrid. The enforcement comes amid ongoing protests against overtourism in Barcelona, with locals expressing concerns about the impact of tourism on the city
