Members of the French parliament have now begun voting on the no-confidence motion in Michel Barnier.Prime Minister Michel Barnier says France's fiscal difficulties"will not go away" with a no-confidence vote, as he defends his contested budget.
It is expected to see his government become France's first to be forced out by a no-confidence vote in more than 60 years.French lawmakers will hold a no-confidence vote shortly on the future of Prime Minister Michel Barnier. "He is dying a rather slow, painful political death as one speaker after another gets up there to say they're going to vote for having no confidence in the prime minister," Dominic says.
Addressing Barnier, hard-left France Unbowed lawmaker Eric Coquerel said:"You will be the first prime minister to be censured since Georges Pompidou in 1962." As we have been reporting, Michel Barnier is likely to be ousted in this evening's vote after just three months in office. He's best known in the UK as the man who led the EU's talks with Britain over its exit from the bloc from 2016 to 2021.
The French politician also called for a broad coalition across the political spectrum without the far-right.
