The former Scotland captain reckons things could go from bad to worse if Gareth Southgate's side see off Spain.
So by kick-off tomorrow night I should be fully stocked up with the ultimate Scotland fans’ survival kit. Headphones, ear plugs, noise cancellers, I’m getting the lot. None of the cheap stuff either. I don’t mind spending a few bob for the best quality I can get my hands on because they’re going to have to last. I have a horrible feeling we might be needing them for quite a while after this current tournament is over.
For the time being, I’ll be waiting for the delivery man to come to my door before Southgate’s side face Spain in Berlin tomorrow night. Believe me when I say, I hate to say I told you so. But I did tip them to go all the way before a ball had even been kicked in Germany and the more I’ve seen of them at this tournament the more I’ve been getting that sinking feeling that I was probably right all along.
That was certainly the story on Wednesday night against the Netherlands. From the moment Xavi Simons put the Dutch in front, they grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and started bombing forward from all angles. Yes, Southgate yanked the handbrake up at half time and from then on it was probably a 50-50 match. England reverted to being stuffy and slow in possession, sitting off the game and allowing the Dutch to take control.
And I don’t expect them to change either when they come up against the Spaniards, who have been the best team at the whole tournament. I can see it being a rotten final and England winning it 1-0 or nicking it 2-1 in extra-time. I might not enjoy seeing England win but I could happily watch these lads play all day, every day because they are so talented at what they do. And that’s the main reason why I think they’re going to win it. Yes, Spain have a brilliant team and the two boys they have in the wide areas are out of this world. At the age of 16, Lamine Yamal is just ridiculous. There’s no other word for it.
