The Record Sport columnist and former Ibrox captain heaped praise on midfield duo John Lundstram and Ryan Jack.
This isn’t a case of me saying, ‘I told you so!’. But, even so, I did warn Rangers and their fans not to get too carried away on the back of a strong second half against Real Betis the other week. In this column I wrote about the importance of Michael Beale and his players reconnecting with the support which they probably did for the first time this season in that Europa League opener against the Spaniards.
So I was very interested to see how they would react when Livingston came to town on Wednesday night and, to their credit, they certainly responded in a much more positive manner. Right from the first whistle they were popping the ball around, taking one or two touches maximum. The passing was faster, much more purposeful and it set the tone for the rest of the night. Again, this comes with a warning.
They then ended the game strongly scoring another couple and sending the fans home a little bit happier again. It’s now a matter of doing that consistently because it’s the lack of consistency which is causing all the problems and feeding into the frustration of the fans. I’d look into the eyes of the guy I was up against and you could almost see him physically wilting. The trick is to sicken them. Move the ball quickly, make angles to receive it and don’t hide when one of your teammates is in possession. For me, John Lundstram and Ryan Jack were the ones driving this tempo on Wednesday night from the middle of the park. Lundstram has become a bit of a whipping boy for some fans and I can almost hear people sighing when I say Jack should be in the team.
