But in Scottish football – and especially here in Glasgow – it’s more like a virtual stranger. With the odd swear word thrown in for good measure. So now Rangers have got two games under their belt the penny will be beginning to drop for Michael Beale’s new boys.
And some of them might be wondering how they can win such an important European game and still hear the grumblings because they didn’t win it comfortably enough for the liking of the fans. A word of advice, get used to it lads. This is what playing for Rangers is all about. I actually felt a bit sorry for the new No.9 because the thing the fans don’t get is that these guys will need a bit more time before the relationships on the pitch click into place.
It takes game time to get to work all of these things out until you reach the stage where you know them inside out. Only then can you really play on your own instincts. And, in three or four weeks from now, I’m sure Dessers will have settled into the same kind of natural rhythm. He’ll know without having to look what spaces the likes of Danilo or Todd Cantwell are taking up. And that’s when the free flowing football that the Rangers fans demand to see can really begin to flourish.
If I was Beale I’d send the two out of them straight back out again this weekend to lead the line against Livingston because they need more time together to get to know how each other plays and for that on field relationship to build. It will come. But it’s going to take time. For now, I’d rather concentrate on some of the positives which came out of the other night because it was certainly a much improved performance from the one we saw at Kilmarnock on Saturday.
