Anthony Gordon has been heavily linked away from Newcastle United in recent months. We examine Bayern Munich’s current pursuit of the England international.

The north-east giants are believed to be holding out for another £10m for the 25-year-old winger although there is a growing expectation that a deal is likely to get done.

Gordon is “very keen” on joining the German giants this summer as they step up concerted efforts to lure him to Munich. The England international has been a crucial player at St James’ Park this season, and has netted 17 goals and picked up five assists, with 10 of these strikes coming in the Champions League. Gordon has no doubt been a major player for Newcastle this season.

Without his goals, the club surely would not have reached the round of 16 in the Champions League before they were knocked out by Barcelona. He has also scored several important goals in the Premier League, including a winner in the 1-0 victory over Chelsea in March.

However, Gordon has also had plenty of tricky spells this season and was heavily criticised by the fans in the winter for his displays. At the start of the Premier League campaign, he also went eight games without picking up a goal contribution, with the winger also suspended for three matches for a red card against Liverpool in this time period.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if the Magpies could sufficiently replace the England international if he were to depart in the coming months. The 16-year-old star played in 27 Championship matches this season, where he scored once, and picked up two assists, but was unable to prevent their relegation to League One. Monga is wanted by numerous Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and both Manchester sides.

Leicester do not want to lose him, but a sale this summer may be inevitable given the interest in him. As a result, Newcastle may view the youngster as Gordon’s eventual successor, with both wingers specialised to play on the left flank.

However, it remains to be seen if the Magpies can get a deal over the line over the coming months, in what is a highly important transfer window for the club.
