There was also pressure on BBC chiefs from the head of Ofcom, Melanie Dawes, who told MPs at a select committee hearing that trust in the corporation was on the line following the Lineker row. “But when it’s about actors, presenters and contributors, it’s a slightly different question. They need to be weighing freedom of expression alongside the wider reputation they have for impartiality.”
Ms Lopez said: “Richard Sharp was appointed in a transparent way. From my department’s perspective, the appointment was undertaken to the letter.
