The BBC has been forced to pull Miriam Margolyes' 'shocking' three-word remarks about a Charles Dickens character from a Radio 4 show

BBC chiefs had to cut a controversial remark made by Miriam Margolyes on Radio 4 after she called a Charles Dickens character "Jewish and vile".

Despite laughter from the audience, the BBC decided to remove the remarks from the broadcast. A spokesperson for the BBC told the Mirror: "This was an unexpected comment made during a live broadcast which should have been challenged at the time. We have taken swift action to remove it from the programme and it is no longer available."

During her trip to the Australian outback, Miriam paid a visit to Broken Hill, where she met 14 year old Abbie, who has started The Rainbow Shoelace project to combat homophobia. Abbie, identifying as queer, has faced severe backlash including bullying and death threats for her initiative. Miriam encouraged the resilient teen not to abandon her project, affirming: "They're just pathetic and you will not give up your project, you are you and you are changing the world and you're magnificent. What you have to face is that you have courage and in that courage, you've forged an idea which is going to give courage to other people."
