This year’s finalists included an isolated Hebridean cabin and a sandstone villa in the West of Scotland
The Series 8 finale for Scotland’s Home of The Year was held at Glasgow's House for an Art Lover. A mid-century Edinburgh bungalow transformed by a family over a decade and a half has been crowned Scotland’s Home of the Year 2026.
The hit BBC programme which sees properties across the country judged by interior designers Anna Campbell-Jones and Banjo Beale, along with architect Danny Campbell, returned to our screens in April. After travelling the length and breadth of the country, the judges chose six finalists including a cosy modern cabin on the Isle of Skye and a Victorian sandstone villa in Kilmacolm.
The competitors came face-to-face for the first time, meeting the judges and getting to catch a glimpse of each other’s homes, in the series finale filmed at Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s stunning House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park. But it was the Homegrown Hoose in Mortonhall, Edinburgh, belonging to horticulturalist Emily Hairstans and her husband Robert that won the coveted title of Scotland’s Home of the Year.
The couple, who share their home with their children Jackson and Ada, as well as the family's chickens, have spent 15 years gradually transforming a property Emily initially admitted to hating when she first viewed it. She was “honoured” by the judge’s decision, saying: “It’s been a rollercoaster experience taking part in the series and hugely exciting. Our home just evolved into what it is, we didn’t start out with something like this planned.
”Architect and lecturer Danny Campbell praised the homemakers’ "original approach", saying that it "encourages others to push the envelope and challenge what design can create at home.
" Interior designer Anna Campbell-Jones described it as a perfect example of a house that "grows and changes as a family needs it to". She added: “This was expressed so clearly, physically in the home and each addition or alteration reflected what the homeowner’s preoccupations were at each point. ”Isle of Mull based interior designer Banjo Beale agreed, saying: “It wasn’t just designed, it was lived into existence, every inch rooted in purpose, place, and a bit of graft.
I thought it was a lovely blueprint for a modern family home. ”A ninth series of Scotland’s Home of the Year is currently in production and is due to air next year.
