Food critic and BBC personality Giles Coren has revealed his recent diagnosis of prostate cancer. He shared his journey in a heartfelt announcement in The Times, emphasizing the importance of early detection and raising awareness about the disease.
Renowned food critic and BBC personality Giles Coren has publicly disclosed his recent diagnosis of prostate cancer . In a candid announcement published in The Times on Friday, Coren revealed that he received the news at precisely 9:30 am on Wednesday. He shared that his decision to undergo testing stemmed from high-profile cases involving individuals like Stephen Fry and Bill Turnbull, who brought increased attention to the disease.
Coren's initial prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test yielded a result of four, which is considered abnormal. His doctor explained that his cancer was a 'slow cancer all men get' if they live long enough. Despite an inconclusive MRI scan, Coren initially resisted a biopsy. However, he eventually consented to further examinations at the Royal Free Hospital in North London. Over time, his PSA score progressively rose to six and then seven. Doctors discovered cancerous cells in three out of the 21 samples he provided, with the tumor measuring less than a millimeter in size. While the malignancy does not necessitate immediate treatment, it will be closely monitored for any signs of growth. Coren, a prominent figure in journalism and broadcasting for many years, has been a contributing writer for The Times since 2002. He was honored with the title of Food and Drink Writer of the Year at the British Press Awards in 2005. Born in Paddington, he is the only son of the late journalist and humorist Alan Coren and the elder brother of comedian and television presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell. The news of Coren's diagnosis underscores the importance of prostate cancer awareness. Prostate Cancer UK highlights that 1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. The disease primarily affects men over 50, with risks increasing with age, particularly for black men and those with a family history of the illness.
