The former BBC newsreader is accused of having had 37 photographs on WhatsApp, including six of the most serious type.

A BBC spokesperson said: ‘The BBC is shocked to hear the details which have emerged in court today. ‘There can be no place for such abhorrent behaviour and our thoughts are with all those affected.

As he arrived at Westminster Magistrates Court today, he was swarmed by photographers – some of whom were knocked to the ground – and refused to answer any questions. The broadcaster was flanked by eight police officers, and one photographer’s camera was smashed to pieces.
