The Prime Minister has dumped expectation he would announce the Voice referendum date at the Garma Festival, in a strategy shift aimed at salvaging his bid to change the Constitution.

“There needs to be at least 33 days notice of the referendum campaign, but there certainly doesn’t need to be that very long campaign. And once the date’s announced, then it will be the campaign on in earnest.“I don’t think Australians appreciate very long campaigns. That’s been the case in the past, so I don’t envisage it this time.”
Mr Albanese said the Yes side needed to shake up its efforts. Essays for and against the proposed Indigenous advisory body were sent to the Australian Electoral Commission for inclusion in the official referendum booklet ahead of a Monday 11pm deadline. The former shadow attorney-general and Liberal Indigenous spokesman dismissed claims the advisory body would be legally risky, bureaucratic and costly, while defending Yes campaigners from racist attacks.
