A woman who died in a siege near Newcastle was killed when a “beanbag” round entered her chest and struck her in the heart, senior police say.
A 47-year-old woman who lost her life during a standoff with police near Newcastle died as a result of a “beanbag round” striking her in the chest, entering her body and hitting her heart, senior police say.
Krista Kach died in hospital after police shot her with a beanbag round to bring to a close a nine-hour siege. Tactical police had shot Kach with a beanbag round, a shotgun round designed to incapacitate rather than kill, in the chest. “Those beanbag rounds are defined as a less-than-lethal option. Unfortunately, in this case, which happens in a small number of cases, it has proven fatal,” Hudson said.
