Beauty Guru Ali Webb on the Importance of Feedback and Why You Should ‘Embrace the Mess’
In 2010, Alli Webb, the founder of Drybar, started a multi-million-dollar beauty business that would change the way women got blow-outs, which involves blow-drying their hair straight after a wash and styling it based on the customer’s preference.
“I inadvertently stumbled upon a need that I didn’t really know was there other than my own personal necessity,” says Webb, 48.. The concept quickly gained popularity and Drybar started opening shops in every major U.S. city. In 2019, Webb and her co-founders sold Drybar to Helen of Troy for US$255 million. Today, Drybar is a franchise that has more than 140 locations around the country.
The best piece of career advice I’ve gotten is… being really open to feedback from your team and your friends and family and your customers. As much feedback as you can possibly get, as much as it stings and sucks to hear it, go get it. Elicit it.
