Texas is back in the top five of the AP Top 25 after dealing Alabama its worst home loss since 2004. Finally, can anyone actually disagree?
Texas spent nearly half of the 2000s ranked in the AP top five, appearing there in 80 of 166 polls from 2000 through 2009, per. The Horns were a model of consistency, their status in the rankings rarely questioned. That consistency abruptly stopped in 2010. After two more weeks in the top five, they embarked on an absence that stretched for more than a decade — a time in which they still spent plenty of weeks in the poll, even when they didn’t deserve it.
But at long last, there’s no justifiable pushback to Texas rocketing up the rankings. The Longhorns leaped from No. 11 to No. 4 following their landmark 34-24 win at Alabama, their first against a team ranked in the top five since 2010 at Nebraska. In fact, it was Texas’ third-ever road win against a top-three team, joining victories in 1969 at Arkansas and 1941 at Texas A&M.
Can Texas stay there? How far off is Alabama from a typical Nick Saban team? We’ll find out soon enough. For now, Texas can celebrate what feels like its biggest win in more than a decade and the pausing, even if temporary, of the narrative about the Longhorns consistently disappointing. They have a signature win, and they’ve earned their place in the top five. I voted them third, and two voters put the Longhorns No. 1.
