China on Monday insisted it has “sovereignty” over Scarborough Shoal after the Philippines reported a “close distance maneuvering” of a Chinese Coast Guard vessel and condemned it as a “violation” of
regulations for preventing collisions.
“China has sovereignty over Huangyan Dao and its adjacent waters as well as sovereign rights and jurisdiction over relevant waters,” Wang said. Huangyan Dao is the name that China uses to refer to the Scarborough Shoal located west of Zambales. The Philippines calls it Bajo de Masinloc, but it lost control over the shoal after a standoff with China in 2012., the Philippine Coast Guard said the incident happened while BRP Malabrigo was patrolling on March 2.
The PCG also noted that the incident resulted in limiting the maneuvering space of BRP Malabrigo, which was"a clear violation of the 1972 International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea."
