Beijing has accused Australia of using “groundless Chinese threat arguments” as an “excuse” to expand military power, in a veiled response to Canberra's sweeping defence review.

When asked about the Albanese government's sweeping defence review, Beijing accused Canberra of inflating “groundless” threats.

Ms Mao’s remarks come after the review attributed the need for an upgraded strategy to China’s growing military and aggression. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Defence Minister Richard Marles on Monday revealed the government will implement all recommendations from the review. “Trade as a proportion of our economy today is far higher than it was in 1985 that means that we are much more reliant upon those sea lanes.“That body of water is now clearly central to Australia’s national interests in a way that it wasn’t back in 1985.”
