Belfast City Airport is issuing fines of up to £100 to drivers who stop outside designated drop-off zones to pick up passengers. The airport cites safety concerns and the need to protect pedestrians and emergency vehicle access as reasons for the new penalty system.
Belfast City Airport has issued a statement regarding the rules for drop-offs after some drivers received £100 fines for picking up passengers outside the designated drop-off zone . The airport has implemented a system of issuing fines of up to £100 to anyone who stops outside these zones, with cameras used to identify vehicle owners.
Currently, the airport charges a minimum fee of £3 for the first ten minutes of drop-off or pick-up, while the long-stay car park offers up to 10 minutes of free parking. The issue came to light when former DUP Special Advisor Tim Cairns was fined for parking at a layby near the airport. He used social media to criticize the airport for charging £60 for dropping off on the road outside the designated zone, stating there were no signs warning about the fine. He claimed the airport must have cameras but no visible warnings, calling it a 'fairly underhanded' practice. Mr. Cairns mentioned that he received a letter informing him of the fine after the 14-day period for a reduced penalty of £60 had passed. In a statement to Belfast Live, an airport spokesperson emphasized the safety and security of passengers, staff, and site users as top priorities. They explained that vehicles frequently stop in 'no stop zones' despite clear markings and signage, posing a hazard to other motorists, pedestrians, and blocking emergency vehicle access. The spokesperson stated that penalty notices were introduced to protect everyone on site and are managed by an external provider. They added that approximately 60 signs are clearly displayed across the airport advising motorists that stopping in a 'no stop zone' will result in a penalty notice of up to £100 or £60 if paid within 14 days. This information is also available on their website. They reiterated that 10 minutes of free parking is still available for all motorists in their Long Stay Car Park, conveniently located a short walk from the terminal
