'This kind of wanton violence by men under the influence of substances has become so serious that severe deterrent sentences are necessary, whatever the personal circumstances of the offender'
A Co Antrim man who choked another man unconscious and bit part of his ear off in a city centre attack was jailed for two years today .
He pleaded guilty to two charges committed on April 26, 2022 - namely wounding the injured party and possessing a kitchen knife in a public place. The emergency services were called and whilst the injured man was taken to hospital and treated for wounds including the ear injury, police arrested Diver at nearby Donegall Place.
Outlining Diver’s catalogue of mental health issues, which includes a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, Judge Smyth said these impacted his ability to think rationally in confrontational situations. Also noted were Diver’s 94 previous convictions and drugs tests conducted whilst on remand in prison which were either failed or refused by him.
