During the first full meeting of Belfast City Council post-US election, DUP and Sinn Féin councillors expressed distinct views on President-elect Donald Trump, exemplifying political polarization within the council.
Belfast City Council has sent out very mixed messages on the new incoming American president during the first full meeting of councillors at City Hall since the US election last month.

Trump. If I were Sinn Féin following the recent election results I wouldn’t laugh at someone who can actually win elections. They might want to take some notes.
“President Elect Trump is a friend of Northern Ireland, and thus the onus is on us, as a country and indeed a capital city to strengthen that special relationship. And further to strengthen that special Ulster Scots relationship between our great shores, through the Vice President JD Vance, a proud Ulster Scot, seizing the opportunities for cultural cooperation.”
Later during Official Announcements, Sinn Féin Councillor Áine McCabe said: “We are currently within the 16 days of the White Ribbon Activism for Ending Violence Against Women and Girls. In the Robing Room there is a piece of paper I would encourage members to sign, pledging that we will do all within our power to eliminate violence against women and girls.
“Those who agreed with the statement “men who don’t dominate in relationships aren’t real men” were at 52 percent, while those who agreed “a man’s worth is measured by his power and control over others” were at 54 percent and those who agreed “real men shouldn’t have to care about women’s opinions and feelings” were at 46 percent.
She added: “Crucially I would say we need more male leaders across all sectors and strata of society to step up, to become a strong voice to call out every day sexism, misogyny and gender inequality. And Donald Trump isn’t one of them.”
