'Our refuges are open over the Christmas period to provide emergency accommodation. Please don’t suffer in silence help and support is available'

A number of groups and organisations have come together to raise awareness for support available to those who are victim to domestic abuse.

"If you are someone who is suffering from domestic abuse, reach out! If you know of someone who is suffering from domestic abuse, try and talk to them, please assure them that there is always someone to talk to and get help. It's best if at all possible to get them to report it. We all need to do whatever we can to eradicate domestic abuse and assist those who are suffering from it. Those involved in inflicting domestic violence should stop it immediately.

Claire Hamilton, Chief Inspector of West Belfast PSNI said: "Domestic abuse is threatening, controlling, coercive behaviour, violence or abuse including psychological, virtual, physical, verbal, sexual, financial or emotional inflicted on anyone by a current/former partner or family member. "The Domestic Violence and Abuse Disclosure Scheme is operated by the police and allows enquiries to be made about partners, ex partners or someone else’s partner. Applications can be made via the Police Service Website by visiting here.

Each person supported by MAP will be supported by a fully qualified counsellor from first to last contact.
