Belfast City Council has approved £60,000 in funding for Halloween festivities and a special Buskfest this autumn. While the funding was unanimously agreed upon, Sinn Féin raised questions about the direct allocation process for the Halloween plans.
Belfast Council has committed to spending £60,000 on city centre 'animation' for Halloween and a special Buskfest this autumn.
The report states: "It is essential to address the challenges that the city centre is facing while aligning with initiatives such as the UNESCO City of Music designation, Belfast 2024, Make Yourself at Home tourism strategy and the core principles of co-design and partnership working. The remaining funding for Halloween will go to a pumpkin patch in the grounds of City Hall over two to three days.
“This is certainly the first time I have seen us in council spend any money on Halloween. How did this come about and why was it not in an open process? Because clearly this was something designed by Belfast One, who then came to us. Councillor McLaughlin said: “If this was any other event during the year we would have said it should have gone out for open call. If this is something we will be doing every year I would have huge concerns.”
