Cllr Anthony Flynn was behind a motion on the proposal and a report is now being drawn up
Belfast City Council made history when it became the first city on the island of Ireland to endorse the international plant based treaty. But now councillors will take the landmark step even further by adopting a plant-based approach to all of its catering.
The motion, which was passed by the committee, states that council “Agrees to engage with the Plant Based Councils initiative and to commit to fully plant-based procurement where food is served throughout the council estate, prioritising seasonal local produce to support local farmers.“And ensure that there are plant-based food options available at all City Council run events, as well as prioritising plant-based menu options in council run facilities.
He says it will help provide people with more healthy options and make a positive impact on the environment, as repeated reports have outlined how meat production harms the environment. Belfast City Council ’s hospitality is provided through a number of catering contracts, with a report to the committee saying “they may not currently provide for plant-based catering”. Details about any financial impacts will be reported at a subsequent meeting.
