Lough View Integrated Primary School was founded by parents who wanted an alternative to the segregated education that was provided in the area
An integrated primary school in Belfast has been celebrating and embracing the diversity of its pupils as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations.
As part of their anniversary celebrations, the community at Lough View held a Culture Day in June. It featured 20 stalls offering traditional food, games, music, and dancing, with more than 1,000 people experiencing culture from countries such as Senegal, the Philippines, India, China, Denmark, USA, Lebanon, and Turkey.
"The Culture Day event was a way of marking all the people from different countries and cultures that are in our school, the contribution they make to our society, what we can learn from them, and how we can all benefit from that. "I think the really important thing about integration is that we can look at the differences between pupils and learning from that. The kids can learn about others in their class from different cultures and ask them questions about it," Fiona added.
Looking back on 30 years since the integrated primary school was founded, Fiona said they have come a long way, adding that the celebrations have been "lovely." They have been able to welcome back past pupils, parents, and the group who founded the school to help mark the occasion. "People probably thought the initial parents were crazy at the start - instead of sending their children to the local school for P1, for them to say they're sending them to one up the hill in the middle of nowhere, where there's no tables and there's rats running about the place. We've come such a long way since then.
