A Belfast man with over 100 previous convictions for motoring offences was jailed today for getting behind the wheel whilst banned.
Before he imposed the sentence, Judge Mark Reel was told by Crown barrister Rosemary Walsh that the offences occurred in May 30, 2022. Ms Walsh said on that date, Ward arrived at the Belfast home of a friend, having driven there in a Ford Transit van. She told Judge Reel Ward had a ten-year driving ban imposed in June 2017 and the aggravating factor in the May 2022 case was his extensive criminal record. Defence barrister Stephen Toal described Ward as an isolated man with no family support.
He added the offending was “spur of moment, when a person with severe mental health difficulties is not thinking rationally and makes a foolish mistake”.
