Due to the increasing popularity of the instrument, shown through numerous social 'uke groups' popping up around Northern Ireland, the first Belfast Ukulele Festival will be held at The Deer's Head pub from August 19-21. Read more: Meet the ukulele group bringing music and craic to Belfast park
The first festival will be headlined by three different ukulele acts. Amelia Coburn was nominated for the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards and has performed at the Cambridge Folk festival, Czech Ukulele Festival, and on stage with Steve Harley, Vin Garbutt, and the Wedding Present as well as her own sell-out solo shows.
The third headliner is Ukulele Simon, a live performer and YouTuber from Norwich, UK. His signature style uses effects, looping, beatbox and anything unconventional to push the limits of what the ukulele can do.
