A Belfast student has shared his experience of a programme helping care experienced young people into higher education.
Jonathan Boyd, who is from the Bangor area, is a care leaver and wasn't sure he would ever attend university. For ten years from the age of 17, he suffered with alcoholism, but after getting professional help he began to pursue academics. "I went to Belfast Met and did an Access course - three A Levels in eight months is pretty gruelling, but I did it, and now I'm here. I'm two thirds into my degree and thinking about postgrad.
She said: "Unfortunately young people with care experience are some of the most underrepresented communities at university.
