Dog lovers in Northern Ireland are invited to take their pets on a special walk this Autumn to support families affected by dementia.

His widow, Maggie, describes how Lucy was never forgotten by Bob, even in the later stages of his illness. She said: “I know it’s a cliché, but she literally was his best friend. Bob had dogs most of his life, he was particularly fond of Yorkshire Terriers and one of his called Beauty, lived until she was 22 years old.

Maggie, together with their daughter, gave up work to care for Bob and the couple would attend their local Alzheimer's Society Singing for the Brain group as well as a nearby dementia café. The latter, Maggie describes as a ‘lifeline’ to have been able to speak to Alzheimer's Society volunteers and get answers to her many questions.

Katie said: “Once Eddie has his special lead and bandana on, he knows he’s doing a role and is incredible with our mum. As part of his PAT role, Eddie visits mum’s specialist dementia care home, where he receives a warm welcome from residents who often light up and chat to him during his visit. You can join in at the memory walk in Belfast in Ormeau Park on October 12, 2024 and share an incredible day with others who understand how it feels to be affected by dementia.

Facilities Accessibility The meeting point is on level, paved ground. Both routes are on pavement and are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs with assistance.
