Gerry Blain, a beloved tour guide at Victoria Square shopping centre in Belfast, has been awarded the first-ever 'Spirit of Belfast' Award at the Belfast Chamber Business Awards. Blain, who has been working at the centre since its opening in 2008, is known for his passion for sharing the history and stories of Belfast with visitors. His dedication to showcasing the city has earned him widespread recognition and admiration.

A Belfast tour guide has won a first-of-its-kind award for his significant contribution to the city. Gerry Blain has been working at Victoria Square shopping centre since it opened in 2008, where he first started out as a customer service supervisor before becoming the centre's tour guide.

Gerry, whose office is the dome at the top of the shopping centre with views across the city, tells the stories and history of Belfast to tourists, while also advising on what to do in the city while people are visiting. As a recognition of his dedicated work in showcasing the city, Gerry won the first-ever Spirit of Belfast Award at the Belfast Chamber Awards in October 2024. Speaking to Belfast Live about his award win, Gerry said: 'Honestly, I was completely taken by surprise and didn't quite understand it at first. But it's a reminder that making people laugh and feel welcome is a gift in itself. I was absolutely thrilled and honoured to receive the first Spirit of Belfast Award!' Gerry said he has always loved his job, adding it's 'heartwarming' to be remembered by visitors who bring their families up to the dome to see him. Gerry said: 'I joined Victoria Square on March 3rd, 2008, just before it opened. To me, it’s a straightforward yet rewarding role—being friendly, assisting customers, and chatting about Northern Ireland, Belfast, or the centre. 'I’m passionate about sports like rugby, football, and ice hockey, and I enjoy making people laugh. It’s always heartwarming to be recognised by returning visitors who bring their families back.' As for what he loves most about his job, and his favourite stories to tell visitors, Gerry said: 'I love meeting people and having craic—I can genuinely say my day feels complete when I’ve made someone smile! It’s the little moments, like sharing a laugh or enjoying a friendly chat, that make my work so fulfilling. 'One of my favourite stories to share is about Jonathan Swift and his connection to Cavehill. Legend has it that Swift was inspired to write Gulliver’s Travels after looking up at Cavehill and noticing a face-like formation in the mountainside. It’s a fascinating piece of history that ties Northern Ireland to literary brilliance!' Posting about Gerry's award win, a spokesperson for Victoria Square said: 'We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Gerry Blain, Victoria Square’s beloved Tour Guide, has won the first-ever Spirit of Belfast Award at this year’s Belfast Chamber Business Awards! 'Gerry’s heartfelt connection to Victoria Square and his passion for sharing the history and stories of our vibrant city left a lasting impression on the judges, leading them to create this brand-new category . 'Every tour he gives at Victoria Square is filled with enthusiasm, showcasing not only the beauty of Belfast but the spirit that makes it so unique. We are beyond fortunate to have someone like Gerry on our team, inspiring locals and visitors alike. Well done Gerry!'
